The first thing to do when arriving at the club is to sign-in at Clubhouse Reception as a Sailor.
- We would recommend that you arrive between 10:30 and 11 am to complete this process, as the subsequent crew registration is between 11 and 11:30 am.
- After signing in using the Sailor option, please make your way to the RQYS Bistro and make yourself known to the WAGS organisers
- The organisers will endeavour to find you a spot on a boat for the race. Please note this is subject to availability.
- If a place on a boat is identified, you will be introduced to the Skipper and must purchase a SailPass, which will provide you with insurance cover for the day.
There are three (3) options available to assist you in participating in a WAGS event; those being:
- Provide evidence of membership of an Australian Sailing-affiliated yacht club
- Purchase a SailPass after being allocated a place on a boat by organisers on the day
- For more regular attendees, join as Crew member of RQYS. Information is available here.
Please note:
- Placement on a vessel for WAGS will be prioritised in the following order 1) RQYS member 2) Affiliated Yacht Club member and 3) SailPass visitor. As such we cannot guarantee that you will make it onto a vessel to go sailing.
- The number of spaces available is completely dependent on the number of boats entered in WAGS and if the skippers of those boats have any available spots for extra crew.
- Depending on weather and the vessel you are assigned, the sailing event / competition can take anywhere between 2 to 4 hours.
In terms of what to bring, we recommend a bottle of water, clothes that can get wet and shoes with non-marking soles (so as to not mark the deck of the boat). You must be physically fit to participate as the waves and wind can be strong and the boat hull will be heeling and unstable.

New Years Day (Asked December 31, 2024 at 3:13 pm):
Is WAGS happening on New Years Day Wednesday 1 January 2025?
Answer:
No WAGS Racing is scheduled for the 01/01/2025 next race is 08/01/2025
Start Line (Asked September 15, 2024 at 9:59 am):
Having done a couple of WAGS now, we are confused as to where on the boat you take as crossing the start line. We would have thought the bow but a couple of times it seems to have been mid-ship.
Answer:
As is often the case, the key to answering this question lies in knowing where to look. WAGS Sailing Instructions section 9.4 states, ‘The starting line will be between a staff displaying an orange flag on the start boat at the starboard end and an orange buoy at the port end…’ This means the Start Line is ‘drawn’ from the flag pole (staff) displaying the orange flag (often positioned at approximately mid-ships) to the orange buoy (known as the ‘start pin’).
WAGS WhatsApp group (Asked August 22, 2024 at 6:47 pm):
I understand that there is a WAGS WhatsApp group. How does one actually join this group?
Answer:
Great Question. The WAGS WhatsAPP Group is what we use to send out timely notices and the ROs daily briefing. To join download WhatAPP on your phone and then click the red “WhatsApp Notification Group” Button found on the WAGS Regatta page https://www.rqys.com.au/wags/
As Always if you need further assistance don’t hesitate to get in touch with the Sailing Office.
Are Furling headsail allowed? (Asked August 22, 2024 at 1:51 pm):
Another Skipper had also asked me if furling headsails are allowed?
Answer:
It Depends.
I Draw attention to Sailing Instruction 3.2 “The headsail must be fully hanked, or attached by means of a luff groove device, to the forestay…”.
This means if your headsail is the type to fit into a track on the furler it meets the “luff groove device” rule. However if the sail is only attached at the Head and Tack it is not permitted (Per Sailing Instruction 3.1).
Can you use multiple Head Sails in WAGS? (Asked August 22, 2024 at 1:45 pm):
Can more than one head sail be use during the race?
Answer:
Yes!
You can use more than one headsail over the course of the race. HOWEVER, only one may be hoisted at any time. This means the original sail must be dropped and then the new sail may be hoisted.
