Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron Celebrates Historic Victory: Matt Wearn’s Back-to-Back Olympic Golds

In a momentous achievement, Matt Wearn has made sailing history by winning back-to-back Olympic gold medals in the Laser (ILCA 7) class. This remarkable feat marks the first time an athlete has secured consecutive golds in this category. Hailing from Western Australia, Wearn has been a dedicated Laser sailor since his youth, and his relentless pursuit of excellence has paid off spectacularly.

Adding to the significance of this victory is the fact that it represents the fourth consecutive Olympic gold medal in the Laser class for Australia, solidifying the nation’s dominance in this discipline. This historic win is a testament to the strength and consistency of Australian sailing on the world stage.

A key figure behind Wearn’s success is his coach, Rafa Trujillo, a Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron (RQYS) member and accomplished Finn sailor. Over the past four years, Trujillo has been instrumental in honing Wearn’s skills and preparing him for the rigors of Olympic competition. When not traveling through Europe for competitions, Trujillo can often be found at RQYS, either sailing his Finn or offering motivational talks to junior sailors, sharing his wealth of experiences and infectious enthusiasm.

Trujillo’s positive demeanor and captivating stories about his sailing adventures and successes have made him a beloved figure at the club. Members and visitors alike are encouraged to take the opportunity to greet Trujillo in the coming weeks and congratulate him on his pivotal role in Wearn’s triumph.

The Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron and its members extend a MASSIVE congratulations to Matt Wearn, his family, and the entire Australian Sailing team for this incredible achievement. Special recognition goes to Rafa Trujillo for his dedication and exceptional coaching, which have been vital to this historic success.
